A Step Back In Time...
Chinatown was once a place for the migrants, who came to Singapore hoping to make their fortune in the early 1800. The shophouses in Chinatown are built in orderly straight roads which are part of Sir Stamford Raffles Plan of the Town of Singapore in 1835 where street are organised in a grid form. Life back then was not easy together with the poor living conditions in Singapore. People had to rent bed space in a shophouse where they were confined with many others in the room. Kitchen and toilets were also unclean and unhygienic, shared with everyone living in the same unit. Furthermore, fresh water had to be transported in by bullock-drawn carts. Thus, Chinatown is also known as 牛车水, Niu Che Shui.
