76 Club Street

Next Stop 76 Club Street!
Guess who photobomb in our picture? He is actually the one who looks after the place.
The elite of the Straits Chinese community set up the Chinese Weekly Entertainment Club, which is located at 76 Club Street. It is founded in 1891 by a Peranakan millionaire as a gentlemen's club for the rich among the Chinese community. Many of the rich businessman will met nightly to socialise. It is believed that the Chinese Weekly Entertainment Club gave Club Street its name. Based on the uncle who looks after the place for the Chinese Weekly Entertainment Club, he was not sure about the history of the place. However, according to him, members of the Club will be required to pay a huge sum of member fees each year.

The grand building with white and gold paintings and the look of the luxury cars parked in its carpark on a normal weekday shows that the Club still counts among its members which include some of the more wealthy members of the modern day Chinese community in Singapore.
Today, the club is still a place for members to socialise and network. However, they are not as active as before.

The beautifully drawn paintings found at the side of the building caught our attention as it clearly depicts the activities in the early days where the community will come together and socialise.
