Trengganu Street

Trengganu Street got its name oft he sultanate and state on the northeastern side of Peninsular Malyasia. In Hokkien, the street is called „the cross street of Kreta Ayer“. Kreta Ayer is the Chinatown area and the crossing of Smith Street and Sago Street.  Trengganu Street was in Cantonese also known as „theatre side street“ which is a reference tot he Lai Chun Yuen Theatre.

Hawkers used to sell a variety of wares, from cheap cooked food to household goods day and night on Trengganu Street in the past. In 1968, there were 1,200 hawker stalls operating daily in the central Chinatown area.

Today, Trengganu Street has been converted into a pedestrian mall. Some of the shophouses are home to performing art groups.
