Sri Mariammann Temple

Sri Mariamman Temple was built in the year 1827 during colonial times. It is also the oldest hindu temple that can be found in Singapore. It was constructed for the worship of Goddess Mariamman by immigrants from the Nagapatnam and Cuddalore districts of South India. During this time when the hindu indians start to build the places for worship it shows that they are staying in this island for awhile which means they thinking of starting their roots here in Singapore.

As it was a weekday when we went for the trip it has lesser crowd in the temple. Nevertheless it did had quite a number of worshipers in this oldest hindu temple in Singapore. I think it was labelled as a National Monument as it is the most significant and oldest temple that can be found in Singapore. The architectural design of this temple shows a three-dimensional sculptures of Hindu deities in relaxed poses, and used to have statues of sepoy soldiers wearing khaki uniforms inspired by the military tradition of the British raj. It has become a tourist places for visits in Singapore.

As we walked along south bridge road, we found other interesting places of history as well.
